#SKINFORMED / Mature skin prone to hyperpigmentation

Danijela B., 45 years old

Skin type : dry

Main challenges with the skin : Brown spots (from the sun, pregnancy, hormonal contraceptives...), dryness (lack of sebum), surface wrinkles, non-inflammatory acne (closed comedones and blackheads)

"My skin is dry and prone to hyperpigmentation. I'm most interested in how to get rid of the hyperpigmentation spots that I noticed forming on the part of my face under my glasses on my cheek. I have some closed comedones here and there."

What are hyperpigmentations and how do they occur?

Hyperpigmentations are changes on the skin that we see as light brown to dark brown spots of smaller or larger areas. They mostly appear on the forehead, cheeks, and nares, but they can appear on any part of the face.

They arise as a defensive reaction of your skin to excessive exposure to the sun, but they can also arise due to a genetic predisposition. They are sometimes called the "pregnancy mask" because they can appear as a reaction to hormonal changes in pregnancy, but also during the use of birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy.

The role of melanin for the skin

The dark pigment melanin, produced by melanocyte cells in our skin, provides natural skin protection against the negative effects of UV radiation, and its concentration varies from person to person. During the formation of hyperpigmentation spots, there is an increased production of melanin, which you see on your skin in the form of brown spots.

How to get rid of hyperpigmentation?

With this problem, the most important thing is to regularly and abundantly use a product with a high protection factor every day and avoid direct exposure to the sun in order to maximally avoid new and darkening of existing spots. We advise you to protect your skin with a hat and sunglasses as an additional method of photoprotection.

The primary treatment product that will help is a keratolytic, like our Lumion . It is a liquid chemical peel that contains a combination of AHA acids (glycolic and lactic acid) and PHA acids (gluconolactone). Lumion works by exfoliating superficial, dead skin cells, thereby gently removing brownish cells and revealing new, "young" skin. Lumion is designed in the form of a tonic and can be applied with a pad or fingers to dry and cleansed skin in the evening routine, before the usual hydration. Given that it is a potent product, it is advised to gradually introduce it into the routine of people who are beginners in the use of acids. After the initial 1-2 times a week, when the skin gets used to it, the frequency of use can be increased.

In addition to helping to even out the skin tone, Lumion will be useful in many ways in this case, as it also affects the texture and helps to repair comedones and refine shallow lines and wrinkles. This product is ideal for all skin types who want to work on spots and uneven texture at the same time, and the skin will be smoother to the touch and visibly reduced in its blotchy tone.

As a treatment product, Lumion is sufficient in the routine for this problem, but the action can be synergistically enhanced by adding an ingredient that acts as a melanin inhibitor. One such ingredient is sodium ascorbyl phosphate, a vitamin C derivative from Superba C serum that has a strong antioxidant effect and enhances the photoprotective protection factor when applied in combination with Solar I fluid in morning care.

For dry, tired and mature skin that notices signs of aging, we recommend Lunar for daily basic care. This  the gentle, nourishing cream contains as much as 5% panthenol and 6% shea butter, which makes it extremely restorative and complementary to a routine in which we use strong active ingredients such as acids. An additional advantage of this product is the formula with peptides, active ingredients clinically proven to promote the synthesis of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid naturally present in the skin, which results in visibly improved tone and lifting of skin contours.

Cosmetic products can make a big difference in evening out superficial hyperpigmentation, but it is necessary to behave responsibly in the sun and be aware that the results will be absent if we are exposed to the negative effects of solar radiation.
